SAB bags mining contract at Bauxite Hills

Metro Mining has awarded SAB Mining with the mining contract at its Bauxite Hills operation in North Queensland.

Brisbane-based Metro launched construction at Bauxite Hills in July and expects to start mining at the site, 100km north of Weipa, in April next year.

The contract scope of works involves all land-based mining activities, including clearing and pre-strip, bauxite mining in accordance with the mine plan, haul truck operation, loading of barges, rehabilitation of mined areas, and maintenance of plant and equipment.

Privately-owned SAB is already at Bauxite Hills undertaking civil works for mine construction, according to Metro.

The mining contract is initially based on a two-year term, with a two-year extension option at Metro’s discretion.

Metro managing director Simon Finnis said the company was delighted to have engaged SAB to carry out the mining services at Bauxite Hills.

“SAB has been integral in assisting Metro advance the project to where it is today and their formal appointment for mining operations represents another key milestone for the project,” Finnis said.

“Metro and SAB will work together to prepare for mining activities with the of mobilising the mining fleet to site in March 2018, ahead of forecast production in April 2018.”

SAB also provides mining services at the Sonoma coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
