Rio Tinto appoints new aluminium chief

Rio Tinto has appointed Alfredo Barrios has its new head of aluminium.

Barrios steps into the role as Jacynthe Cote leaves the business "for personal reasons to pursue other interests," Rio Tinto stated.

He begin the role on 1 June, and will be based in Montreal, Canada.

Cote will continue in an advisory role until 1 September to "ensure a smooth transition".

Barrios' comes TNK-BP, one of Russia's largest oil and gas companies, where he worked as the executive director and executive vice president – downstream at the company.

Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh thanked Cote for her work at the company, stating "Jacynthe has long been a key member of Rio Tinto's leadership team and has enjoyed a successful career with Rio Tinto and Alcan spanning more than 25 years".

He went on to say "we are delighted to welcome Alfredo to Rio Tinto who will undoubtedly bring renewed vigour and experience to our aluminium business".
