Rio extends Chinalco deadline

Rio Tinto has extended Chinalco’s May 31 deadline to June 15.

Rio Tinto has agreed to extend the deadline by which Chinalco must confirm whether or not it will help fund the miner’s planned expansion of the Yarwun 2 alumina refinery.

In an announcement to the ASX, Rio said it would extend the original deadline from May 31 2009 to June 15 2009.

“The Yarwun 2 expansion was approved in July 2007 and construction is now 29% complete,” the miner said.

The expansion will more than double annual production, increasing alumina output by two million tonnes to 3.4 million tonnes by 2011.

According to the announcement, Chinalco requested the extension to allow it to complete its project evaluation and approvals processes.
