Rinehart to judge Christmas lights competition

Billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart has flown into regional Queensland to judge a Christmas lights competition in Alpha and Jericho.

Rinehart, who is developing the Alpha Coal project with Indian conglomerate GVK, has also donated two trips to Singapore and cash prizes as part of the competition.

Barcaldine mayor Rob Chandler told ABC News both mining companies had brought positive developments to local communities in QLD.

"The Christmas light competition is only one of many things that Hancock Prospecting and GVK Power are doing for the Alpha and Jericho communities," he said.

"As far as roads and airports and support for the paramedics in Alpha, they have pledged around $30-odd million, post the granting of the mining development lease, so they have stepped forward."

Chandler said the lights competition was a coveted award in Alpha, and there were 20 to 30 nominations in the running.
