Redundancies at Coppabella Mine

MACARTHUR Coal has confirmed that the Coppabella mining contractor, Downer EDI Mining, will be reducing its staff and subcontractor numbers at the Coppabella Mine.

MACARTHUR Coal has confirmed that the Coppabella mining contractor, Downer EDI Mining, will be reducing its staff and subcontractor numbers at the Coppabella Mine.

The Coppabella and Moorvale Joint Venture (CMJV) own the mine; Macarthur Coal has a 73.3% interest.

Macarthur Coal foreshadowed in December 2006 that the transition from contractor to owner operator mining would create operating efficiencies for Macarthur Coal and its joint venture partners and lead to a net decline in the Coppabella Mine workforce.

The CMJV has surplus mining production capacity at Coppabella Mine beyond its port contract.

Macarthur Coal and Downer EDI Mining have agreed that Downer’s production requirements would be reduced as part of the transition plan.

As a result, the timing of the planned redundancies at Coppabella Mine has been brought forward.

As the CMJV ramps up mining production as owner operator at Coppabella Mine, additional staff will be required and the company advertised this weekend for about 40 additional mine operators and maintenance staff.
