The mining, resources and energy industry enjoyed the fastest rate of advertising growth of all industries on jobs portal SEEK in June, according to Australian and New Zealand managing director Michael Ilczynski.
Job ads for mining, resources and energy were up 84 per cent year on year (y/y), with mining states – Queensland and Western Australia – displaying signs of recovery, Ilczynski explained.
“Queensland experienced the largest advertising growth on SEEK of all the states and territories this June, up 5.2 per cent month on month (m/m) and 17.9 per cent y/y. This annual pace of growth across Queensland is now the strongest since the mining boom peak in 2011,” Ilczynski said.
“The pick-up in advertising across the Sunshine State has been widespread with strength in Brisbane (up 10.9 per cent y/y), Mackay and the Coalfields (up 88 per cent y/y), Mt Isa and Western Queensland (up 55.6 per cent y/y), as well as Townsville and Northern Queensland (up 47.9 per cent y/y).
“The mining, resources and energy industry enjoyed the largest growth in job advertising in Queensland (up 109 per cent y/y), while trades and services offered the most job opportunities (up 46 per cent y/y).”
In WA, advertising on SEEK rose 13.8 per cent y/y, with mining, resource and energy fuelling this performance, jumping 71 per cent y/y.
“The upturn of job ads on SEEK for Queensland and WA, while off a low base, reflects recent improvements in mining conditions and the pick-up in exploration activity by mining companies as they aim to maintain production levels after having to cut back on capital expenditure for a number of years,” Ilczynski explained.
