QR National has signed a long term haulage contract with Stanwell Corporation to move around 3.7 million tonnes of coal annually.
Stating on 1 July and running until 20 December 2020, QR will move the coal from Wesfarmer’s Curragh mine to the Stanwell Power Station.
Curtis Davies, QR vice president, said this was “a win/win for Stanwell and QR”.
Stanwell’s acting CEO Wayne Collins added that he was “confident that QR’s coal business would be able to utilise its size and scale to meet the transport requirements for the Stanwell Power Station”.
QR has been delivering thermal coal to the power station since 1992, and over nearly two decades has transported more than 54.2 million tonnes.
The security of the coal supply and the flexibility to meet power station variability was a major factor in QR’s contract being renewed, Davies added.
