Probe starts over NSW coal death

An inquest into the death of a worker at Xstrata's Ravensworth mine in 2009 will begin today.

Deputy State Coroner Scott Mitchell will lead the probe into the accident, where 59 year old David Oldknow died after 10 tonnes of coal waste collapsed on him.

According to ABC Newcastle the inquest will determine whether 12 hour shifts, common at some coal mines, contributed to the accident.

At the time of the accident police said Oldknow drove a truck into a coal loader, and died at the scene.

The inquest will investigate the accident this week in Sydney.
