Gas levels at the Pike River coal mine are fluctuating dangerously causing the area to once again be evacuated.

The GAG (Gorniczy Agregat Gasniczy) jet sent by Queensland Mine Rescue Service (QMRS) has  also been switched off following news this morning that teams were working to seal surface cracks around the shaft of the jet.

Workers were about to begin pumping Riscil sealant into the cracks today, when conditions became unsafe and the hillside was evacuated at 1pm New Zealand time.

Another drill hole is planned for the main coal face area of the mine to monitor gas and temperature levels.
