Pike River Coal disaster families get payout

The families of the miners killed in the Pike River coal explosion will each get NZ$ 190 000 from the Pike River Disaster relief trust.

The families of the miners killed in the Pike River coal explosion will each get NZ$ 190 000 from the Pike River Disaster relief trust.

The trust met earlier this month to decide on the allocation of donations.

On top of the $190 000, families with legal dependants of the 29 miners killed will receive an additional $15 000 per dependant, trust chairman Greymouth mayor Tony Kokshoorn said according to NZPA.

These funds will be distributed into individual trusts established by the families, which would have discretion as to who the beneficiaries will be.

The trust has now officially ceased its fundraising efforts.

In February, a New Zealand news channel managed to raise nearly $300 000 in donations for the Pike River Disaster Relief fund.

The distribution of these funds is welcome by the families, after previously being told that the process would be complex.
