OZ Minerals has released a power strategy that it hopes will achieve reliable, secure and affordable power for its assets in South Australia.
The first phase of the strategy sees the company’s current operations remain connected to the electricity grid through a new high voltage power transmission line.
According to OZ, the new transmission line will meet its operational requirements and enable its growth strategy in the region.
OZ is progressing agreements with the state government and industry participants to facilitate the development of the line.
The second phase of the strategy will be progressively developed and includes procurement, to take place in the second half of the year, and generation, which includes cost saving initiatives and consideration of renewable energy options.
OZ chief executive Andrew Cole said the company addressed reliability, security and affordability for its mining assets and enabled its growth aspirations for the region in developing the strategy.
“The new transmission line will enhance security of power supply, reduce line losses and enable the execution of the Prominent Hill mine plan, Carrapateena operations and the exploitation of future optionality for district expansion at Carrapateena,” Cole said.
The power strategy also includes an onsite solar generation plant at Prominent Hill.
