OZ Minerals has awarded Thiess a $1 billion mining contract for Prominent Hill.
The contract extension will run over six years and ensure Thiess will work at the site until 2018.
According to Thiess, it is already carrying out planning, training and implementation of the ramp-up, which has required an expansion of the contract miner’s existing operation.
Bruce Munro, Thiess’ managing director, explained that "this contract is a recognition of our partnership with OZ Minerals, relationship built since 2006 when Thiess undertook the construction of infrastructure and then the mining for the Greenfield operation at Prominent Hill".
Manager of Thiess’ Australian Mining, Michael Wright, said the expansion requires an additional 170 people over the next few months, with the total open cut mining workforce expected to peak at 550 people.
He went on to say "of our people currently on site, some 90% are based in South Australia, with 15% from regional Aboriginal communities," adding that more than 15% of the Prominent Hill workforce are women, many of whom operate mining equipment.
