Orica names interim CEO

Mining explosives company Orica has announced its new interim CEO, following Ian Smith’s departure last week.

AAP reports that Alberto Calderon, a former BHP Billiton executive, has been appointed acting CEO.

Calderon has run BHP’s aluminium, nickel and corporate development divisions, The Australian Financial Review notes. He has been on Orica’s board since August 2013.

As reported by Manufacturers’ Monthly and others, no reason was given at the time for Smith’s resignation last Thursday, although his style of leadership had raised eyebrows.

He has previously publicly confessed to and expressed regret over an aggressive management style, after an outburst at former general manager of investor relations, Karen McRae.
