Opinion: What has the boom done for us?

ABC Opinion writer Peter Lewis has examined whether Australians believe the mining boom has personally benefitted them and whether it really has saved the nation from the global financial crisis (GFC) and extreme unemployment.

“While the industry tells us they are making us stronger by delivering billion-dollar profits that will trickle down, life goes on in the patchwork economy, with many struggling under higher prices and energy costs some in industries exposed to the high Australian dollar that is at least partly due to said boom,” he writes.

In the column, Lewis also questions whether Australians think the economy is performing well overall, with the majority of those surveyed classing it as “average.”
