Operations resume at Newlands after fatal incident

Work is gradually resuming at Glencore’s Newlands coal mine in Queensland after a fatal incident earlier this week.

A 55 year old UGL contractor was killed in an  incident at the mine’s coal handling and preparation plant on Tuesday.

The contractor was fatally injured , it is believed, when steel fell on him.

Production was halted at both the plant and the rest of the mine while an investigation is carried out.

The restart of operations began yesterday, and will take place in a staged manner in both maintenance and production areas.

In the meantime, “investigations into the incident continue and support remains in place for the family affected by the tragedy, as well as those people working at the mine,” a Glencore spokesperson said.
