According to a report by the Queensland Government’s Department of Mines and Energy, there were 228 fires in the 12 month period from 1 August 2007 to 31 July 2008.

Mackay made up 41% of the fires, while Rockhampton made up 38%.

The results went further into uncovering what caused the greatest percentage of fires.

According to the results, 60% of all fires last year directly related to mobile coal mining equipment.

On closer examination of the 161 fires that occurred on mobile equipment, 92 are said to have occurred in the engine bay and 69 elsewhere on the equipment.

A number of fires were also said to be caused from a lack of adequate maintenance including such things as rags and/or flammable material left in the engine or loose oil and fuel filter housing.
