The NSW Government is introducing new measures to strengthen the management of environmental impacts of mining in NSW.

The proposed Mining Amendment Bill 2008 is aimed at ensuring the Mining Act is consistent with contemporary environmental standards, community expectations and recent developments in the legislative and regulatory framework.

A position paper on the proposed amendments was publicly circulated in 2005 and was strongly supported by the mining industry and environmental groups, according to the Government.

Key amendments include incorporating principles of ecologically sustainable development, and broadening the definition of the environment to cover all potential impacts.
