Gold miner Newcrest Mining has ramped up its focus on developing digital operations through a partnership in India.

Newcrest has signed a collaboration agreement with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to create an innovation and digital operations centre (IDOC) in the South Asian country.

The centre will leverage TCS’s global research and innovation networks to explore opportunities to improve activities across Newcrest’s business, including ore processing, techniques for predictive targeting and leveraging learning from other industries.

Newcrest managing director and chief executive officer Sandeep Biswas said the company wanted to enhance and accelerate the way it used automation and artificial intelligence through the partnership.

“It presents an exciting opportunity to leverage TCS’s and Newcrest’s strong track record of innovation,” Biswas said.

“At Newcrest, we are committed to being leaders in technology and innovation. We are always seeking out new ways to improve our operations.”

Newcrest will work with TCS experts in engineering, research and development, data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT), and process control.

It plans to build on its existing digital platforms through the collaboration.

TCS president, energy and resources, Debashis Ghosh, said, “Our independent agile method provides the foundation for the strategic collaboration with Newcrest, for the design and adoption of innovative digital mining solutions to enable Newcrest’s aspirations.”
