New underground drill rigs launched

Atlas Copco has unveiled new underground coring drill rigs.

The manufacturer stated that safety has been increased on the rigs, which eliminates many of the historical hazardous encountered in underground core drilling.

According to Atlas the new Diamec Smart 6 core drilling rigs feature advanced control systems that provide automated functions such as in the drill and adding and removing of rods, cutting the risks faced when handling the long inner tubes and rill rods, which can be up to three metres and 100 kilograms, in the process of extracting core samples.

“By using the unique rod handler, the operator can perform the work from a safe distance,”
 Atlas Copco stated.

“All adding and removal of in the hole (ITH) equipment are done automatically.”

This lifts safety for operators and increases productivity.

Martin Sommers, vice president marketing – Exploration Equipment at Atlas Copco, explained  “there is an increasing focus on safety within the mining industry and the new Diamec Smart series sets a new standard for underground core drilling rigs”.

The new control systems on the Diamec Smart rig is based on the Rig Control System that is used throughout Atlas Copco’s drilling rigs.
