New South Australian gold mine gets the greenlight

Havilah Resources will begin mining at its Portia mine north-west of Broken Hill, in South Australia.

Havilah has lodged an unconditional bank guarantee with the South Australian Department for State Development (DSD) to cover its mining rehabilitation bond, which in turn allows the miner to provide notification of its intention to commence mining at Portia, effective as of yesterday.

Following this, Havilah will begin establishing a 50 person company and workshops facilities on site; start surveying the mine site and commence required siteworks; install dewatering pumps, construct pipeline corridors and a water storage dam; re-establishing an airstrip; and mobilising heavy earthmoving equipment to site.

Chris Giles, Havilah's managing director, said the notification to commence mining is a major milestone for the miner.

"Since signing the mining agreement CMC and Havilah have been working tirelessly to complete all the documentation required to allow commencement of mining activities," Giles said.

"At this stage CMC remains on track to commence mining and removal of overburden in mid-March, with a lot of preparatory work continuing at site by both parties in the meantime."
