BHP Billiton has appointed Ian Maxwell as president energy coal following Jimmy Wilson's move to become president of iron ore.
Maxwell previously led global mining research for Citigroup, and worked for Anglo American and Rio Tinto earlier in his career.
In a statement BHP said Maxwell, who has been at the company since 2004, had "invaluable global experience".
BHP's base metals strategy and development vice president Danny Malchuk will take over Maxwell's position as president minerals exploration.
Earlier this year the company's head of iron ore Ian Ashby announced his resignation after spending more than 25 years at the company.
