Mining moves: Rio Tinto, Ausgold, Volvo

Australian Mining brings readers the latest corporate appointments and departures impacting the local and international resources industry. 

Rio Tinto has appointed Philip Richards as its group executive, legal. Richards will have responsibility for all group legal services and will join the Rio Tinto executive committee. He has been acting in the role since December 2016 on secondment from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was a senior partner specialising in corporate law.

Matthew Greentree has been appointed chief executive officer of Ausgold. Greentree has more than 19 years’ experience in minerals exploration and mining in Australia, Asia, Africa and South America. He is an experienced geologist with expertise in structural geology, exploration targeting in greenfield and brownfields environments, managing multidisciplinary studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

James Kennedy has been appointed business director for Volvo Construction Equipment in the Oceania region. Kennedy will be based in Perth, Western Australia. Together with Volvo CE’s distribution partners CJD, Transdiesel and Cipac he will be responsible for driving and developing Volvo’s construction equipment business in Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia.

Tech company Maptek has appointed James Moncrieff as its general manager to lead operations across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the CIS countries. A part of the Maptek family for 13 years, Moncrieff was until recently managing the Maptek I-Site reseller distribution network in Asia from the company’s Adelaide office.

Helix Resources has appointed Gary Lethridge as the company’s non-executive chairman. Lethridge brings extensive experience to the Helix board as a chartered accountant and chartered secretary. Most recently, he was the managing director of Talisman Mining.

Rare earths developer Northern Minerals has decided to reduce its board from seven positions to five. While it was deemed appropriate to offer board positions to strategic cornerstone investors, the size of the board had grown to be larger than optimal for a company of Northern Minerals’ size, it said. Former chairman Conglin Yue and former deputy chairman Kevin Schultz have both offered to step down from the board to concentrate on other business interests.

Kalium Lakes has appointed Rudolph van Niekerk as its chief development officer. His responsibilities will include the development of the Beyondie Sulphate of Potash project, 160km southeast of Newman in Western Australia.

Molopo Energy has appointed Alexandre Gabovich as the company’s managing director. Gabovich was appointed to the company’s board in February and has a strong track record leading operations in emerging markets, as well as in international business development.

Wang Ruobing, chairman of the Jilin Jien Nickel group, has been appointed to the board of Metallica Minerals as a director. The Jilen Jien Nickel group is Metallica’s largest shareholder, and China’s second largest nickel producer.
