An Adelaide court has ruled in favour of native title claims and blocked a bid to explore vast mineral deposits at Lake Torrens in far north South Australia.

Straits Exploration made a request to the Environment Resources and Development Court to authorise drilling following negotiations to reach a native title agreement.

Their bid has failed, with the Kokatha Uwankara people opposing the project due to sacred significance.
The court has ruled there was a genuine and significant native title claim to the land.

Native title claimants gave evidence in court that was highly sensitive and confidential.
They say they have sacred ties to the land, where traditional “men’s business” was conducted.
