Miners rescued in US

A group of seventeen miners who were trapped in a New York State salt mine have been rescued from an elevator shaft, 274m underground.

The elevator became stuck in the Cargill mine shaft on Wednesday night (US EST) while the miners were descending to start their shift.

Emergency services were able to lower blankets, heat packs and other supplies to the miners, who were freed on Thursday morning.

In China eleven miners did not share the same luck, tragically killed after a coal mine collapse in Shaanxi province on Thursday afternoon, however 49 of their colleagues were able to escape the collapse.
