Miners give Hall of Fame a lifeline

The WA mining industry has donated more than half a million dollars to ensure Kalgoorlie’s Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame remains open.

The $600 000 donation will allow it to remain open until the end of the year, after which a financial review will be carried out, The West Australian has reported.

Operating for a numbers of years, it provides gold mine tours more than 70 metres underground, but has struggled financially in the last few years, which resulted in a government bail-out in 2010.

Despite the donation, Hall of Fame CEO Andrew Govey said it was still around $400 000 short.

However, Govey announced a new future for it, focusing on mining education and careers.

"At the end of the day, we need to convince the mining sector that we are an important part of their industry," he said.
