Miner sacked for smoking underground

A Bowen Basin worker has been sacked after smoking on the job in an underground coal mine.

ABC News reports the miner was found with cigarettes and a lighter while working underground at Peabody Energy's North Goonyella mine near Moranbah.

A spokesperson for the Department of Mines and Energy told the ABC after the man's coworkers smelt smoke he was quickly located and taken to the surface.

The man was immediately sacked and an investigation is underway to decide whether he made breaches to the Coal Mining Safety and Health act.

According to ABC News Peabody is assisting the Department in its investigation.
