Miner killed at Newlands coal mine

A 55 year old worker has died after a fatal incident at the Newlands coal mine.

The incident, at the Glencore owned open cut mine, occurred around 10 am on Wednesday morning.

The contractor was fatally injured whilst carrying out maintenance work at the site’s coal handling and preparation plant.

Production was halted at both the plant and the rest of the mine while an investigation began into the incident.

“We are co-operating with the relevant Queensland authorities and have commenced an investigation into the fatal event,” a Glencore spokesperson said.

“Our primary concern remains the safety, care and welfare of the man’s family and our Newlands workforce.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the contractor’s family, and we will be providing all possible support services and counselling for those people working at the mine.”

The Newlands mine is located near Glenden, in Queensland.
