Miner evacuates as cyclone approaches

Mt Gibson Iron Ore has evacuated Koolan Island staff ahead of cyclone Magda.

Mt Gibson Iron Ore has announced it is evacuating its Koolan Island operations as cyclone Magda bears down.

The storm is expected to reach category three intensity early today and has been forecast to potentially become a category four storm as it heads towards the island.

According to the weather bureau, Magda is expected to be at category three intensity as it passes over Koolan Island about midday local time.

Mt Gibson announced that it is “currently taking all necessary preparations, including evacuating 228 employees from Koolan Island as a precautionary measure.”

However, 64 emergency crew will remain on the island, moving to a purpose built cyclone shelter.

Mt Gibson’s Koolan Island project has sen cyclones hamper its operations previously in early 2008.

Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 220 kilometres per hour as the cyclone continues throughout the day.
