A 56-year-old Townsville man has suffered serious injuries after a truck rollover at a Queensland gold mine on Tuesday.

The worker was driving a dump truck at Wirralie gold mine, west of Mackay, when it rolled at around 8am, according to Brisbane Times.

Fellow workers helped free the man – who was trapped in the truck’s cab – and transferred him to worker accommodation to await a rescue helicopter.

He sustained severe chest trauma, a collapsed lung, internal injuries, and a possible fractured shoulder and pelvis.

An RACQ CQ rescue worker said called the man “incredibly lucky” given the extent of his injuries and the site’s remote location.
