Mine Rates May Be Refunded by Council

Every council in Queensland will be affected by the outcome of rate refund negotiations, according to the Whitsundays Regional Council.

Earlier in November, the High Court would not hear an appeal from council, following a complaint from Xstrata about the rating system for mines in Collinsville.

Mayor Mike Brunker says the council may have to refund the rates paid by the company three years ago.

“It not only affects us but everyone across Queensland”, he said.

Brunker believes the decision was made based on the wording of rates policy for industry, and councils across Queensland should check its wording in their rating policy.
