Middlemount Coal complete rail spur

Middlemount Coal has completed the rail spur linking the mine to the Goonyella rail network.

The 16.5 kilometre rail line will allow coal to be shipped directly from the Middlemount Coal project through to the Dalrymple bay Coal Terminal.

The miner labelled the construction of this line a significant milestone for the project, which is a joint venture between Gloucester Coal and Macarthur Coal.

"The Middlemount Coal project is the first Greenfield project since 2007 to being production in the Bowen Basin," Middlemount chairman Tim Crossley said.

"The completion of the rail spur marks the commencement of ongoing operations and the progressive ramp up of coal production."

Initial exports from the project will be via existing allocation at the coal terminal, although the project will have long term port access at Abbot Point after the completion of the Northern Missing Link.

Last month QR National achieved a major milestone in its missing link construction, and expects to run trains on the line by January next year.
