THE Geraldton Iron Ore Alliance has engaged consultants, the Conan Group, to assist in developing a Sustainability Model covering the social, economic and environmental aspects of mining, specifically relevant to the Mid-West region.

Other national and international sustainability models exist, but the GIOA envisages that a region-specific set of principles will more closely align its members with the social and environmental context of the Mid-West.

The Model will ultimately promote a viable long term industry with subjects such as local employment preferences and environmental conservation as key themes.

As the first step, Alliance members are developing a set of Sustainable Mining Principles and will participate in a workshop in February to progress this initiative.

“Ultimately, we are seeking to achieve sustainable mining operations in the Mid West region, while demonstrating to the wider community our commitment to environmental and social outcomes,” Rob Jefferies Deputy Chairman for the GIOA said.
