Mining consultancy MEC Mining has expanded into Western Australia with the opening of a Perth office.

This enables MEC to better serve its client base in Western Australia, while diversifying both geographically and across commodities, according to general manager operations Christofer Catania.

The opening of the office will also cater to the needs of MEC’s client base in Africa.

Brisbane-based MEC specialises in mine planning, onsite management and technical services solutions for open cut and underground mining.

Its expansion will see Erin Sweeney, the former superintendent of Newcrest Mining’s Telfer gold mine in Western Australia, transition to leadership at MEC’s new branch.

Sweeney led a team of 17 engineers, surveyors, geotechnical engineers and technicians in her former role as technical services superintendent.

She has worked across a broad range of commodities and technical roles over the past 15 years of mining career, building on her background in geotechnical engineering.

“I’m pleased to be joining the MEC Mining family and feel confident leading the business’ expansion into Western Australia,” Sweeney said.

MEC director Simon Cohn said Sweeney was the ideal person to help lead MEC Western Australia.

“(Sweeney) is a results-driven professional who is focussed on adding value and ensuring safe and sustainable growth through technical influence,” Cohn concluded.
