Konecranes CXT crane ensures high standards at Sandvik Kalgoorlie facility

A five-tonne Konecranes CXT crane is helping Sandvik maintain safety and quality as it relocates to a new facility in Western Australia’s Goldfields region.

Sandvik is making the crane a permanent part of the Kalgoorlie facility, which has been constructed in response to strong demand in the region.

The crane will be used for essential maintenance and workshop tasks, including lifting mining machinery components like gearboxes and engines for a range of underground and surface mining machinery.

It was installed with a load display and radio remote control features to further enhance safety and usability across a diverse range of lifting tasks.

Sandvik customer service centre manager – Kalgoorlie, Hoffie Van Huyssteen, said the remote control feature was not unique in the market, but the simplicity of Konecranes’ version made it attractive.

“The fact that it’s not overly complicated means that our technicians can learn how to use it faster, and it helps improve the safety, too,” said Van Huyssteen.

“With Konecranes products – safety is built into the design. The load display not only shows the user what load is being lifted, but it will prevent the lift from operating if it’s over the maximum limit. For us, these features are vitally important to maintaining our safety culture.”

CXT wire rope hoists are staple lifting devices used globally in maintenance tasks, production lines, engineering industrial warehouses and factories. Their strength, compact size, speed, reliability and safety make them a valuable tool in assembly workshops.

Van Huyssteen said Konecranes shared Sandvik’s strong culture of safety and quality.

“We were impressed even further by Konecranes’ exceptional communication and organisation throughout the entire process. The commissioning of the new crane, which included runway installation, went so smoothly and self-sufficiently that I could devote my time elsewhere, whilst receiving regular updates on the progress of the new crane,” he said.

“Additionally, the support from the local Konecranes Kalgoorlie branch exceeded our expectations.

“Konecranes perform inspections on a range of our other hoists and lifting equipment, so we were confident that the professionalism and after-market service would be outstanding – and they certainly delivered.”
