Killed Rio Tinto worker named

The shutdown fitter killed earlier this week at the Channar mine has been named as Lee Buzzard.

Buzzard was killed earlier this week after an incident occurred during maintenance activities on a drill in the Channar pit.

In an internal email, obtained by The Pilbara News, Rio CEO Sam Walsh stated an investigation as underway, adding, “This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our colleague who lost their life.”

“We are devastated by this incident and the loss of a life, which for the deceased’s family and our colleagues at Paraburdoo will have a lasting impact.

“We are working hard to eliminate fatalities and it remains the most important priority we have. We must continue to work together to achieve this.”

Rio Tinto is working with police and the WA DMP, and carrying out an internal investigation into how the incident occurred.
