Kalgoorlie hit by earthquake

An earthquake has forced the evacuation of the Super Pit.

Gold mining town Kalgoorlie has been rocked by an earthquake this morning.

Measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, the quake has damaged houses and businesses, while also forcing the evacuation of the Super Pit.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported at the mine, although two people have been taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, according to St John Ambulance.

The earthquake was approximately half the strength of the one that hit Chile earlier this year.
