Joy Global reportedly cuts 25 jobs at Rockhampton

The AMWU has said 25 jobs have been shed at Joy Global’s Parkhurst, Rockhampton plant.

The AMWU’s Peter Lyons has told the ABC the jobs lost at the plant were mainly full-time workers, and, "Unfortunately for the people who have been laid off it'll be terrible kick in the guts for them."

Milwaukee-based Joy Global makes and services heavy machinery for mining. The company has had a difficult start to the year in Australia, reporting a first quarter net income result last week down 65 per cent for the corresponding period in 2013.

Original equipment orders were down 42.7 per cent for the quarter, year-on-year.

The company would not comment on the reported job losses at Rockhampton, according to the ABC.

Lyons said it was further terrible news for the community.

“It's in a bit of a slump at the moment, the drought is affecting the rural economy,” he said.

“Rocky is basically a beef or mining city really.”
