Jobs cut at Rinehart’s Roy Hill

Just days after spruiking the jobs benefit of the Roy Hill mine rumours have emerged Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting has sacked workers on the project to cut costs.

The Australian reports up to 14 contractors were laid off from the metallurgical laboratory at Roy Hill and workers expect more workforce cuts to follow.

According to The Australian the workers thought they would be working on the project long term but were told last week their contracts were up.

The cuts come just days after Rinehart's Sydney Mining Club speech, where she spruiked the job creation benefit Roy Hill would bring to Australia.

Hancock Prospecting has said previously a lack of qualified and available labour in Australia has forced it to secure a deal to bring 1,715 skilled overseas workers to Roy Hill.

Roy Hill officials were unavailable for comment this morning.
