Investigation launched into coal mine accident

An investigation is underway into an accident at Ashton Coal's mine that saw a contractor critically injured.

A 26 year old worker was yesterday carrying out gas drainage drilling at Ashton Coal's controversial Camberwell mine when the incident occurred, the ABC reports.

During flushing a steel pipe disconnected under pressure, slamming into the contractor.

The man, who works for Silver City Drilling, reportedly has critical injuries.

He was flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital soon after the incident.

NSW Primary Industries and unions officials have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident.

In June the mining industry recorded 19 serious incidents due to mechanical failures.
