Industrial action at North Goonyella, expected to intensify

In an exclusive, the CFMEU tells MINING DAILY of the intensifying industrial action at North Goonyella.

In a MINING DAILY exclusive, Vice President of the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), Glenn Power, has stated that industrial action has been enacted at Peabody’s North Goonyella coal mine. Following a revised update of cost improvements by Peabody that has essentially said people would be made redundant, the CFMEU has engaged in work stoppages since 7 November, Power told MINING DAILY. Currently the work stoppages have been between one to 11 hours and will continue into next week. The CFMEU is looking to intensify the stoppages and protective action, going to shift stoppages, 24 hour work stoppages and week stoppages. The CFMEU has scheduled a meeting with Peabody for Tuesday 17 November to discuss proposal put forward by Peabody. Power told MINING DAILY “there will be an intensification of industrial action.”

The North Goonyella mine is an underground coking coal mine located in the north end of the Bowen Basin.
