Immersive Technologies recognises mining excellence at annual awards

Immersive Technologies has announced the winners of its Global Business Improvement Awards 2018.

Marking its tenth year, Immersive Technologies recognises the most outstanding results achieved by mining companies utilising simulation as a key driver in the business improvement process.

Finalists of its Global Business Improvement Awards 2018 are selected for their achievements in continuously improving operational safety, efficiency and productivity through strategic simulator-based training initiatives.

Peabody Energy won the surface mining category in the awards. As part of their, ‘Run for Readability’ program, Peabody Energy targeted multiple objectives related to safety, haul truck spot times, and equipment-based events that led to unscheduled maintenance.

Immersive Technologies and Peabody partnered on a Managed Service solution that involved Immersive Technologies providing a training specialist and analytics support. Results achieved include an 11 per cent spot time improvement and a reduction of 36 per cent in operator induced machine abuse events which led to cost avoidance savings.

“Improving safety and managing costs are important components of the Peabody business model, and the continuous improvement process is core to our success. We are pleased that our ‘Run for Reliability’ program was selected as a Global Business Improvement Award winner for 2018,” said Scott Durgin, VP Operations – North Antelope Rochelle Mine.

Chilean copper mine, Codelco’s Chuquicamata, won the underground mining category. Codelco utilised simulation to conduct a baseline training needs assessment of their load haul dump (LHD) and longhole production drill rig operator workforce.

The insights from the initial operator assessments facilitated the deployment of a strategic training program, targeting certain operator behaviours. The results revealed a 49 per cent improvement in LHD and a 56 per cent improvement in the longhole production drill rig operator behaviours related to safety, production and unscheduled maintenance costs.

Rio Tinto won the Australian Iron Ore Mine category for their adoption of autonomous haulage systems. By teaching operators to apply better digging and loading techniques while managing autonomous trucks, the company found an eight per cent increase in tonnes per hour, improvements in truck spot creation in time and reductions in exception and wait time truck management.

Other finalists included Caserones, who won the Chilean Copper Mine award for their analysing machine health data, and Bengalla Coal, which took out the Australian Coal mine award for their utilisation of shovel production data  to improve excavator dig rates.
