Iluka suspends heavy mineral concentrate shipping amid safety concerns

Iluka Resources has suspended shipping of heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) from the Port of Thevenard in South Australia following safety concerns over part of the port’s jetty.

The company ships HMC from the Jacinth-Ambrosia mine in South Australia’s Eucla Basin to its mineral separation plants in Narngulu, Western Australia and Hamilton, Victoria through the port.

Flinders Ports, which owns the Port of Thevenard, informed Iluka of its safety concern surrounding the structural integrity of sections of the jetty that support a conveyor system used by port operator Viterra for loading.

“Iluka is currently investigating alternative avenues of transport for the Jacinth-Ambrosia HMC, through one of the other ports in the region,” the company said.

The company also said the suspension is unlikely to affect the production guidance or sales volumes for the finished product zircon.

Iluka is yet to identify when loading activities at the port will resume.
