Heron Resources has awarded two key contracts for the Woodlawn zinc-copper project in New South Wales.

The contracts are for equipment supply and mining services for the reprocessing of existing tailings at Woodlawn, which is in the construction stage and on schedule for commissioning at the end of this year.

Activities at Woodlawn will include reprocessing of 9.5Mt of historic tailings from previous operations between 1978–1998, in addition to the processing of fresh ore from underground mining.

Heron has awarded National Pump & Energy (NPE) a contract to provide a complete hydraulic mining package consisting: main and standby track mounted, remote controlled water monitors; water delivery pumps; slurry pumps; screens; and associated infrastructure including strategic spares and consumables.

The second contract has been awarded to Paragon Tailings Australia, which will provide process design, mining planning, construction supervision and support, operator training and personnel to support the tailings reclamation operations.

Heron managing director Wayne Taylor said NPE and Paragon would provide an integrated solution for the supply of equipment and services for tailings mining at Woodlawn.

“These contract awards ensure that Heron’s tailings mining operation will utilise an efficient equipment design with locally available support, operated and supervised by experienced and capable project partners who will also provide training for our own personnel,” Taylor said.

The key technical elements of Heron’s tailings reprocessing operation will include: hydraulic mining reclamation; fine grinding using IsaMill; and sequential differential flotation of copper, lead and zinc to concentrates.

Reclamation rates for the tailings ore will be at 190t/hour using remote controlled water cannons.
