Harvey named as new PWCS chairman

Port Waratah Coal Services has appointed Rio Tinto's chief of coal development Michael Harvey as its new chairman.

Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) yesterday announced the appointment of Rio Tinto’s chief of coal development Michael Harvey as its new chairman.

Harvey will take on the new position from 1 August 2009.

He has been an employee of Rio Tinto since 1984.

In that time he held managerial positions at Rio Tinto Energy, Rio Tinto Iron Ore and Rio Tinto Japan.

PWCS is one of Australia’s most important infrastructure assets, according to Harvey.

“It helped the Hunter Valley to export 91.4 million tonnes of coal in 2008,” he said.

“My clear priorities include maintaining high standards of corporate governance and ensuring that PWCS continues to service the needs of its shareholders and the coal producers in the Hunter.”

Harvey’s predecessor Professor Eileen Doyle announced her retirement on the 23 July after an 11 year tenure.
