Hardware hackathon for resources industries

Barrick and BHP Billiton are partnering with Unearthed, Caterpillar and MRIWA to jointly host the Shield-X Challenge, an international hardware hackathon for the resources industry, taking place from 28 April-5 May 2017 in Perth and online.

The companies are collaborating to change the way the mining industry communicates around safety, and they need the help and expertise of the industrial and precision engineering, human factors and ergonomics, Internet of Things (IoT), and wireless communications disciplines.

“The Shield-X challenge is a great opportunity to bring miners, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs together to generate fresh ideas for our industry,” said Michelle Ash, Chief Innovation Officer, Barrick. “We look forward to working with the talented innovators that will be participating in the challenge and seeing the unique solutions that are generated.”

The competition involves designing a safety-stop device that can communicate to any piece of autonomous equipment, regardless of the brand. Participants will have a week to design a prototype and pitch it online to the Shield-X partners. CORE Innovation Hub is sponsoring a limited amount of co-working space for local Perth participants.

Shield-X kicks off with a live event in Perth on the evening of Friday 28 April, where representatives from each of the partnering companies will discuss their involvement in Shield-X and the potential impact to the industry. The winning solutions will be eligible for more than $20,000 in prizes and a technology workshop with top industry executives and tech talent to assess and develop their prototypes.

“We recognise that people with no mining or resources experience can bring valuable insights to solving challenges the industry faces. We’re excited to partner with Unearthed to tap into the international innovation community in pursuit of more efficient, effective and safer ways to work”, said Graeme Mitchell, BHP Billiton Principal Innovation, Technology Strategy & Innovation.

Through hackathons, online challenges, and a technology accelerator, Unearthed is an organisation that creates opportunities for entrepreneurs and helps improve the efficiency and competitiveness of the global resources sector. Since 2014, Unearthed has connected over 2000 innovators to resource industry challenges all around the world.
