Greens call for halt on mining in Mirani electorate

Greens party candidate Christine Carlisle says she would enact a moratorium on mining around Mackay and Rockhampton if elected.

Greens party candidate Christine Carlisle says she would enact a moratorium on mining around Mackay and Rockhampton if elected.

Her comment comes as Queensland edges closer to a state election, the Morning Bulletin reports.

Carlise will fight for the seat with encumbent member LNP Ted Malone, Labor’s Jim Pearce, the Family First Party’s Mike Crouther, and Bevan Pidgeon from Bob Katter’s Australian Party.

This is the second time Carlisle has entered the fray, gaining 5.5% of the votes in the 2009 election.

She stated that the electorate needs to leave behind the "last century mentality of digging" for renewable energy.

The Mirani district includes coal mines around Dysart such as BMA’s Saraji and Norwich Park coal mines, Xstrata’s Newlands and Oaky Creek coal mines, Anglo American’s coal mines such as German Creek and Foxleigh, as well as Macarthur Coal’s Middlemount mine.
