Gen Y knows what it wants

Members of today's Generation Y will not take a job simply because they need one, rather they will take a job because they are passionate about it, RecruitR director of national recruitment Clinton Moore said.

Members of today’s Generation Y will not take a job simply because they need one, rather they will take a job because they are passionate about it, RecruitR director of national recruitment Clinton Moore said.

Moore said that people from Generation Y, aged 14 to 28, seek jobs that are challenging and exciting, in which they can swiftly move up the employment ladder.

“Generation Y doesn’t seek a job as much as they seek on opportunity,” Moore said.

According to Moore, this new generation is highly educated and technologically savvy.

“The advent of new technologies like mobile phones, instant messaging, Facebook and videogames, when combined with unprecedented educational opportunities means, we have created a generation of quick, flexible thinkers,” he said.

“They are capable of processes that to most oldies seem like completely conflicting, complex tasks.”

Moore said that businesses and recruitment agencies must put plans in place to attract and retain these employees. They have to create opportunities and workplaces that cater to Generation Y’s more dynamic abilities, as well as being fresh and with room to move and grow.

Moore said Generation Y wants flexible working hours, opportunities to do different jobs and access to new technology.

If a company fails in these aspects Generation Y will move on.

“They will put a company’s culture under the microscope and if they don’t like what they see they’ll walk away,” Moore said.

“Flexibility and diversity of experience are the keys to engaging with Generation Y.

“They are simply not prepared to lock themselves into a job or an organisation without believing in what that organisation is offering.”
