GE distributor and service partner Clarke Energy has been selected to provide 11 of GE’s gas engines to power the Gruyere gold project in Western Australia.
Clarke Energy will provide 11 high efficiency Jenbacher J624 gas engines to energy infrastructure company APA Group for its new 45 megawatt Yamarna Power Station in WA, which is being constructed to supply power to Gruyere.
Gruyere, a 50:50 joint venture project between Gold Road Resources and Gold Fields, is located in the Yamarna greenstone belt in WA, around 200km northeast of Laverton.
Clark Energy will engineer, procure and construct the gas-fired power station, with the gas to be used for power generation.
The gas will be transported nearly 1500km using four APA Group interconnected pipelines including its latest greenfield, 198km Yamarna Gas Pipeline, which is currently under construction.
GE’s Jenbacher J624 is the world’s first two stage, turbo charged gas engine. It is suitable for hot environments – such as the Gruyere location – and for use in multiple engine power plants for independent power production and combined heat and power applications. It can also operate successfully with large transient electrical loads associated with mining plants.
The engine delivers higher output and increased efficiency; able to power up to 10,000 Australian homes. It is based on GE’s Jenbacher Type 6 platform with over 4300 units sold.
Clarke Energy managing director Greg Columbus said GE’s gas technology was a suitable fit for APA Group’s safety and efficiency requirements.

The Jenbacher J624 gas engines will be built in GE’s Jenbach, Austria, facility and are expected to be shipped in late 2017.
Commissioning of both the pipeline and power station is expected by late 2018 to align with the Gruyere JV’s expectation of first gold scheduled for early 2019.
