THE Environmental Group Limited has been awarded a $2.2m contract to supply a Flue Gas Desulphurisation system for Rio Tinto Alcan’s Yarwun alumina refinery expansion project at Gladstone, Queensland.

It will be the fourth large Flue Gas Desulphurisation unit completed by EGL in the last FIVE years and will sit on the company’s installation list alongside those built for Rio Tinto, BlueScope Steel, and Ausmelt.

These units have been built as a result of the increased sensitivity of industry and the regulators to sulphur dioxide emissions.

At its design conditions the Yarwun unit will remove 3,500 tonnes of sulphur dioxide annually, that would otherwise have escaped into the atmosphere.

The Yarwun order is due for completion by October 2008 and builds on a successful first half financial year for EGL’s Gas Cleaning business, which has secured over $11 million of new orders since July 2007.
