Federal resources minister has apologised after incorrectly telling the Minerals Council of Australia's official dinner that Nelson Mandela had died.
Gray has officially apologised, saying he is "deeply sorry" after the incident lat night.
"I apologise unreservedly and am deeply sorry to have relayed what I thought was reliable advice," he said.
He has also relayed his apology to the South African High Commissioner.
Mandela, 94, is currently in hospital on life support, following a severe bout of lung infections.
Gray attended the event as a speaker instead of the now former prime minister, Julia Gillard, who was toppled in a leadership spill last night.
